Why We Exist

Our Mission

To guide individuals, couples, families and groups on a transformative journey of reinvention. We employ evidence-based therapies aligned with ethical standards and human-rights principles, fostering a compadre-like therapeutic alliance.

With compassion and respect, we empower our patients to unlock their potential, overcome challenges and embrace a fulfilling, purposeful life — guided by the NASW Code of Ethics and Article 25 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which affirms everyone’s right to health and well-being.

The Compadre Philosophy

Our Approach

The term “Compadre” refers to a close friend or companion — a bond of trust. In psychotherapy, this “companionship” approach emphasizes a close, collaborative relationship between therapist and patient.

Your therapist works alongside you as a trusted companion, exploring your thoughts, feelings and experiences — providing safety, support and validation that helps you overcome challenges, build resilience and achieve greater emotional well-being. The relationship always remains professional, bound by ethical guidelines that protect your safety and well-being.

Our Founder

From Housing Works and Episcopal Social Services to NYC’s renowned hospitals, Marcelino Guillén saw a common thread: people resistant to change — not for lack of capacity, but because they were unaware of the resources within themselves. That insight founded Compadre Therapy.

He earned both degrees Summa Cum Laude at Lehman College, is certified in Advanced REBT through the Albert Ellis Institute, and is a former CUNY professor. “I’m continually seeking new and inspiring ways to support individuals in their journey to reinvent themselves.”

Individual

Individual therapy supports your journey toward reinvention, healing and self-discovery. Using CBT, DBT and REBT, we give you the tools to understand yourself, manage challenges and foster meaningful change — in a safe, non-judgmental space. Therapy here is not just treatment; it's a journey taken together, one step at a time.

Relationships

Couples

Rediscover connection, improve communication and rebuild trust. Using CBT, DBT and Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), we create a space where both partners feel heard and understood — helping couples build resilience and a partnership rooted in trust, empathy and lasting fulfillment.

The Whole Home

Family

Navigate challenges, improve communication and build stronger relationships. Grounded in CBT, Structural Family Therapy and Family Systems Theory, we help families resolve conflict, bridge divides and create a supportive home — moving forward together toward a harmonious future.

Ages 4–12

Child

Tailored to help young children navigate emotions, build confidence and develop coping skills. Through Play Therapy, CBT and Family-Systems techniques, we create a safe, nurturing space for children facing anxiety, behavioral issues, trauma and social difficulties — supporting emotional well-being and a positive self-image.

Ages 13–17

Adolescent

Specially designed for teens navigating adolescence. Using CBT, DBT and mindfulness-based therapies, we help young people manage emotions, build resilience and develop a healthy sense of self — addressing anxiety, depression, peer relationships, family dynamics and self-esteem on the path to an authentic future.

Shared Healing

Group

A supportive, collaborative space to explore, learn and grow together. Led by experienced therapists, groups address anger management, substance recovery, grief and loss, and mood disorders — through CBT, DBT and mindfulness-based interventions. Shared experience, empathy and community in a judgment-free environment.

Emotional Regulation

Anger Management

Individual and group options using CBT, DBT and mindfulness-based approaches. Understand your anger, recognize triggers and develop healthier coping mechanisms in a confidential setting. Court-referred mandates accepted. A path toward personal growth, resilience and lasting change.

Recovery

Substance

Comprehensive substance-abuse therapy through individual and group sessions. Using CBT, DBT and Motivational Interviewing, we help you understand the underlying causes of substance use, develop healthier coping mechanisms and build a foundation for long-term sobriety — with empathy, accountability and hope.

Medical Support

Psychiatric

For patients who may benefit from medical assistance, we offer access to consulting psychiatrists through a referral managed by your therapist — diagnostic evaluations, medication evaluation and ongoing medication management. Seamlessly integrated into your therapeutic journey for holistic care.

Legal Support

Court Prep

Objective, fact-based testimony and records preparation, bound by professional ethics. Therapists testify only to the facts of the case as qualified by the court. A 72-hour minimum notice and structured fee schedule apply — see our Policies for the full breakdown.

Marcelino Guillén
Founder & Clinical Executive Officer

Marcelino Guillén, LCSW

Compadre Therapy LCSW PLLC · Psychotherapist · REBT Specialist · Geriatric Care Manager

I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), psychotherapist, educator, geriatric care manager, and healthcare administrator with more than 25 years of experience serving individuals, families, older adults, and underserved communities throughout New York City. My career has been dedicated to empowering people, strengthening families, and creating pathways toward health, stability, and self-sufficiency.

As the Founder and Clinical Executive Officer of Compadre Therapy LCSW PLLC, I provide psychotherapy services utilizing evidence-based approaches including Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), mindfulness interventions, grief counseling, crisis intervention, and trauma-informed care. I work with individuals from diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds facing challenges related to anxiety, depression, trauma, substance use, relationship difficulties, and life transitions.

In addition to private practice, I serve as Administrator and Geriatric Care Manager for Aging Well Life Care, where I help older adults and their families navigate complex healthcare, long-term care, and quality-of-life decisions. My professional experience spans hospitals, emergency departments, nursing homes, behavioral health clinics, HIV/AIDS services, correctional reentry programs, community organizations, and higher education.

Throughout my career, I have held leadership positions with organizations including Montefiore Medical Center, New York Westchester Square Medical Center, Bainbridge Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Housing Works, Episcopal Social Services, and Brightpoint Health (now Sun River Health). These experiences have provided me with a comprehensive understanding of healthcare systems, behavioral health, aging services, social justice, and community-based interventions.

I am also passionate about education and workforce development. As a former Adjunct Professor within the City University of New York (CUNY) system, I taught Human Services and Social Work courses while mentoring future social workers and advocating for first-generation college students and multilingual learners.

My academic achievements include both a Bachelor of Arts in Social Work and a Master of Social Work from Lehman College, City University of New York, graduating Summa Cum Laude in both programs. I am certified in Advanced Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy through the Albert Ellis Institute and hold certifications in Geriatric Care Management and LGBTQ Family Therapy.

Beyond clinical practice, I am the founder of Compadre Works, a developing nonprofit initiative dedicated to expanding access to behavioral health, supportive services, legal advocacy, workforce development, youth mentorship, aging services, and community-based programs designed to address the social determinants of health. My vision is to create integrated systems of care that help individuals not only survive but thrive.
